Women & Wealth – A Participative Workshop

FLO Chennai’s first event of the year kicked off with an interactive workshop on ‘Women and Wealth’, held at The Hyatt Regency on 12th of June 2013.The excitement and enthusiasm was palpable and there were over 100 people who participated in the event. The theme was aptly titled ‘Women and Wealth keeping with the FLO motto of Inspire, Involve, Impact’.

The team from AnandRathi made an interesting case to drive home the importance of wealth management. They set about their task to ‘unravel mysteries in uncertain times’, as Mrinalini Maher said in her opening address. The presentation by the first speaker Vimal Athithan pointed to the vagaries of wealth management and sought to demystify and emphasise on the importance of asset allocation.

The presentation was followed by an interesting game in which all the members were asked to create a portfolio based in 2003 with a capital of 1 crore which was to be allocated to various asset classes such as Equity, Mutual Funds, Gold, Fixed deposits, etc. Real estate was excluded for this purpose. The portfolio was then checked for its performance as on date. The members with the highest notional gains were awarded handsome gift vouchers from Oryza Spa.

The game was followed by another informative session by the second speaker Amitabh Lara who spoke eloquently about how inflation was the invisible tax and eroded the returns. He stressed that investment management requires a long term vision and should be treated like a test match and not like a T 20 match. He elucidated the differences in the various asset classes based on parameters like taxation, risk aversion, safety and cautioned the members against investing in a euphoric phase.

The presentation struck a chord with the members which was evident in the Q&A session. The workshop was sponsored by Anandrathi and was well covered by the Press. Meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Nabila Avias.
