Heritage walk- Let’s walk through the Legacy & Life of the old city.

On the chilly winter morning of 15th December, 2022, the ladies of FLO Ahmedabad gathered at the House of MG in the heart of the old city to experience the antecedents of this beautiful and historically rich city Ahmedabad.

The walk started at 7.30 am from the Mangaldas Ni Haveli, a short rickshaw drive from the House of MG, from where we meandered for the next couple of hours through the lanes and by lanes of the old quarter popularly known as the “Pol” imbibing the essence of life in the times gone by.

The quirky landmarks starting with the Sheth ni Pol, Bird Feeders, Huteesingh Haveli, Jain Temple, Fernandez Bridge, Old Stock Exchange, Manek Chowk, Rani no Haziro and finally culminating at the Jumma Masjid were a sight to behold. The rich architecture and the culture came to life as our guide regaled us with stories of how Goddess Laxmi never left the city of Ahmedabad on account of the ingenuity and sacrifice of a sentry, or how a diya has been lit every day for the past 600 years at Teen Darwaza or the secret passages that criss-cross the pols.

Moreover, the technical advancement in civil construction also was a revelation. The buildings are constructed in a manner that they are earthquake resistant; the drainage system is so advanced that there has never been an event of flooding plus rainwater harvesting was done even in those days.
After the mentally & physically exhilarating walk, the highlight was the last stop! A taste of the quintessential maska bun and chai at Lucky Café, famous for being patronised by the world-renowned painter MF Hussian.
