FLO Self Defence Training Workshop for Women Technical Institute

In continuation with FLO’s endeavour to make women more empowered and safe, a 15-day Self-defence Training Workshop was organised in collaboration with the Delhi Police and New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) at the Women Technical Institute (WTI) Netaji Nagar, New Delhi. The workshop was organised as a precursor to FLO’s flagship event “Face-to-Face Programme”-this year with Delhi Police on Women Safety on 12 July 2014.

The training commenced on 17 June 2014 and comprised of 60 women trainees. Delhi Police made special provisions for providing the training free of cost by trained women cadets. The training programme not only ensured sense of security among the girls but also boosted their morale and self-confidence.

The sessions were designed to be interactive in nature and included real-life scenarios, role playing, sharing general rules that keep one alert etc. Besides, the following topics were covered:

  • How to defend oneself
  • What types of objects might one use in this process as potential weapons
  • Legal aspects of harassment, abuse, self defence
  • The psychology of the abuser

The workshop culminated on Friday, June 4, 2014. The final day saw the participants giving demonstration of the various self-defence techniques that they learnt during the workshop.

Present on the occasion with Ms Neeta Boochra, President FLO; Ms Harjinder Kaur, GB Member FLO & Coordinator of the Self-Defence Workshop , Seema Kothari, GB member and Dr Manju Kalra Prakash, Executive Director FLO.

In her address to the participants, Ms Neeta Boochra said “The knowledge will help build the confidence of the young girls and would help them to focus their attention better and excel in all their future endeavors without worrying about issues of misbehaving and eve-teasing.” She also thanked Ms Vidushi Chaturvedi, Director(Education), NDMC and Ms Varsha Sharma, DCP, Special Police Unit for Women & Children for playing an instrumental role in facilitating the training workshop.

Certificates of participation were also distributed to all the 60 participants by the dignitaries on the occasion.
