Entrepreneurial Journey of Kiran Mazumdar – Shaw & Session on Exercising Your Electoral Rights

FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) organized an insightful session with Ms. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, who is a pioneer of the biotechnology industry in India. She has been the face of female entrepreneurs as has been highlighted by the many awards that she has received. She has been listed in many influential rain lists like TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people, Forbes’ List of ‘World’s Self-Made Women Billionaires’, etc.

Alongside her career as an entrepreneur Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw has been a global influencer in Biopharmaceuticals by showing commitment towards the cause of getting affordable healthcare to the marginalized communities. She also holds key positions in various industry, educational, government and professional bodies which include, Governing Council Member of the National Institute of Immunology, Member of the Steering Committee of the National Biopharma Mission, etc.

Her philanthropic works deliver affordable world class cancer care services to patients through the Mazumdar-Shaw Medical Center while the Mazumdar Shaw Center for Translational Research, a nonprofit research institute is dedicated to developing scents breakthroughs for treating a wide range of human diseases. She is the second Indian to join the Giving Pledge global initiative created by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates that encourages billionaires to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.

The session was aptly titled “Entrepreneurial Journey of Kiran Mazumdar Shaw: An Empowering Story”. It indeed showed how entrepreneurship is a “journey”, a work in progress and how one has to go through challenges every day in order to succeed. Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw prefers using “compassionate capitalist” over the word “philanthropy”. Her story is a true example of how a “compassionate capitalist” can go on to make changes in the society, improve the lives of the people through innovation and commerce.

As a part of its activities, FLO passes on its mission of giving the society and the females the “The Power to Empower”. It brings together women achievers from all sectors and not just celebrates their success stories but also creates a trail for other women so that they could embark on their own journey towards success.

FLO President, Pinky Reddy said, “Traditionally, the India woman has only been seen as a homemaker. While there is nothing wrong about that, the modern Indian woman proudly flaunts the many other facets of her personality while becoming a powerhouse in the entrepreneurial world. Women are breaking the glass ceiling consistently while leaving their mark in sports, politics, finance while also dabbling into fields that have traditionally been dominated by males.”

“Staying true to the adage of FLO “The Power to Empower”, today’s session is an apt platform to understand what it takes to be an empowered woman through the lenses of Ms. Shaw while she takes us through her entrepreneurial journey.”, Ms Reddy added.
