Boardroom and Beyond- Life and Leadership Lessons- By Ms. Vinita Bali June 18th, 2015

Following YFLO Hyderabad’s theme for the year ‘LEARN-IMPLEMENT-INSPIRE’ Young FLO Chairperson, Ms. Samia Alam Khan and committee members organised an interactive learning session with Ms.Vinita Bali a global business leader.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Ms. Vinita Bali is the Ex MD and CEO of Britannia Industries.

She is now a Non-Executive Director on the global Boards of Syngenta International AG, Smith & Nephew plc, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and the Advisory Board of Cornell University’s Department of Nutritional Science.

She set an endearing tone to the program by choosing to abandon the podium and came off the dais to talk with the members, making it a highly interactive session. Speaking on the topic ‘Boardroom & Beyond- Life and Leadership lessons’ she shared valuable insight on leadership and business skills. She enthralled the audience with her simplistic and pragmatic approach towards working in the corporate culture and leading teams and organisations to success.

KEY POINTS:
Ms Bali started off with a very powerful statement ‘Leadership is not about titles, it is about achieving the goals’. She said passion and competence go hand in hand and one cannot take you anywhere without the other.
According to the speaker, clarity of goal with the ability to execute it is quintessential for a leader. Stressing on the importance of having clarity and conviction to do something, the speaker suggested asking oneself these 3 questions when making a decision: Am I going to learn something from it,

Am I going to contribute something to it, Am I going to have fun doing it?

Talking about failures and obstacles Ms. Bali stated that being focused on the goal takes care of the obstacles. She encouraged members to take success and failure in their stride. Learning from success or failure is more important than the success or failure itself. She said failure is good if it motivates you to do things differently.
Coming with a tremendous experience having lead the best of organisations, Ms. Vinita Bali said that a Leader must lead by example and with empathy. She mentioned that to bring about change one needs to influence and motivate rather than command or demand. She stated “You can bring a lot more out of people when you inspire them. People will follow you more out of inspiration than fear.”
Going further members had an interesting and engaging Q&A session where they asked her about women as leaders, change management and qualities of a leader. Not only was the session interesting, it left the members awe inspired and motivated.

The session was very well attended with more than 150 members bonding over a scrumptious high tea spread.
